Rhodoleia champonii The Hong Kong Rose is a stunningly beautiful shrub to small evergreen tree. Very seldomly offered for sale. It is in the top 25 rare & protected species in Hong Kong.
Known for its brilliant flowers and lush dark green leaves. It is loved by birds, butterflies and insects. The nodding crimson-pink, bell-shaped flowers form in winter/spring and are a sight to behold. Though called a rose, it bears no relation. And is instead related to the witch hazel family. With flowers more resembling those of a rhododendron. It is a striking ornamental shrub or small tree for warm climates. But still performs beautifully in our Sydney climate. It prefers moist, well-drained soil, and thrives in sun to light shade. But loves dappled sun to morning sun best. It can grow to be a small tree 3-4 meters in Sydney, 3-9m in warmer climates. But makes a wonderful shrub when lightly pruned and kept to 1.5 or 2m.
